National insecurity: NUJ leaders storm Umuahia.

Over one hundred State and National officers of the Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ have converged in Umuahia, the Abia State Capital to brainstorm on issues affecting the pen profession, members and national security.

The Union has charged the Federal Government to rise up and take pragmatic measures in addressing the current state of insecurity in the country.

The National president of NUJ Comrade Chris Isiguzo, gave the charge at the opening ceremony of the National Executive Council (NEC) Meeting of the union held in Umuahia, Abia State.

Comrade Isiguzo, stated that, the spate of wanton killings and Kidnapping in the country is worrisome and called for urgent attention to put the ugly development to an end.

The NUJ Boss, noted that it was the duty of a responsible government to provide adequate security for lives and property of the citizenry.

He also said there is need for more cooperation between state governments and security agencies to tackle the state of insecurity which he said is crippling the nation’s growth and development.

According to Isiguzo, the welfare and safety of journalists must be given Paramount priority by both government and owners of Media Organizations so as to enable them deliver optimally.

Comrade Isiguzo lamented a situation whereby journalists were not paid their salaries as at when due while the necessary tools to work with were not also made available thereby, subjecting them to untold hardship.

Ealier , Comrade Isiguzo had appreciated Abia State Government for hosting the meeting. He also called for the building of a modern press centre for the Abia State Council of NUJ.

In his remark, the Governor of Abia state , Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, commended NUJ for it’s pivotal roles at ensuring sustainable peace and unity of the country.

Dr. Ikpeazu who was represented by his deputy, Mr Use Oko Chikwu, said that Abia State had a very wonderful collaboration with security agencies, adding that such had made the state, one of the most peaceful in the country.

He said Nigeria needed the services of Journalists at this moment stressing that Journalists must do away with divisive reports, promote works that would engender peace and development.

The governor promised that his government would continue to do everything possible to promote the welfare of Journalists in the State.
